Latest from ours: www.cell.com/cell-reports...

This is two stories in one: a case study/cautionary tale on developing genetic tools in new organisms, and the first hint at a gene regulatory network for choanoflagellate multicellular development (which turn out to involve a Hippo/YAP/ECM loop!) A 🧵

Our latest preprint! Into morphogenesis, Yap, ECM, signaling, vertex models, feedbacks/robustness? There is something here for everyone. We discovered a positive feedback loop that extends inner ear canals, and a built-in mechanism that shuts it down when morphogenesis is done. tinyurl.com/464wsjhd

Check out this new Roadmap, a fantastic team effort by a consortium of ER researchers. Glad we could provide the space for this synthesis, which came out of discussions at a fruitful meeting, see below:

LMB PhD studentship available in the Baum lab to use informatics to infer cell structure from genomic data in collaboration with the brilliant Tom Williams. If you write to me and I don’t reply - try again - the spam filter is hungry…

Absolutely! What triggers uncoating, is COPII tethered, do lipids or carrier biomechanics matter, how much fusion/fission occurs en route? Are all fission, uncoating, tethering events the same? Can this be regulated? How do these events vary across cell types or cargo, and what defines their timing?

Very exciting. Looking forward to it.

Thank you - it was a fun exercise to arrive at a coherent outline given our diverse opinions and future plans!

I've heard it said that biology research has 25-year cycles - what's exciting now is our ability to revisit questions that started being answered 25 years ago. Time for your return!

That's a fun couple of sessions! Do share feedback and insights from your reading of the roadmap and from your discussions.

Born from a fantastic meeting of the twelve of us — hosted by Hesso Farhan in Innsbruck — this is our deep dive into the fabulous world of ER export. Fresh ideas, new technologies and bold concepts are now solidifying, refining, challenging and expanding on fifty years of rich work in the field.

Really glad to show our recent work using recombinant phosphoinositide probes to investigate membrane identity changes during endosomal trafficking. Should be a great mini symposium to highlight the power of fluorescent microscopy techniques for cell biology!

My new smartwatch keeps nagging me to destress or to exercise. Honestly, the stress is the watch telling me not to stress.
But I’ve cracked the code: the only time it says I'm relaxed is when I'm in the lab: discussing data, writing a review and reading a preprint. Science is my wellness app.

How do resident Golgi proteins recycle during cisternal maturation? Nice preprint from Adam Krahn in the Glick lab shows different classes of intra-Golgi vesicles in yeast: two COPI-dependent (early and mid) and one late clathrin/AP-1/Ent5 pathway.
