Can confirm. I had several relatives growing up who were a) racist and b) had fought Nazis in WW2 and/or knew people who did and never came home. They might make dumb jokes but they knew in their bones that anyone flying a swastika was the enemy.

I dunno if that's true! The damage from global warming is already all over the place from property damage to insurance costs to crop failures etc. And I suspect that China racing ahead on clean energy while we waste time is going to have enormous repercussions later in terms of our power and economy

Ofc, renewables make a useful product/make $/have political support and Trump still wants to kill them b/c he's a weird corrupt goon, so maybe it's more possible than I think. If his acts are precedent then I don't see what stops a full attack on fossil fuels by the next D president if so inclined

When an industry checks the following boxes: 1) makes a useful product 2) makes investors rich 3) has powerful political allies, the only example I can think of where the USG shut it down anyway was slavery. It just doesn't happen. Lots more industries get killed by the competition than by Uncle Sam

It's academic during the Trump Guignol but I feel like, in America at least the first part is also what kills fossil fuels in part 2. We have no real legal framework for shutting successful industries down but we let obsolete industries die all the time.

I suppose you could compare ICE with whatever specific agency in Israel is doing this (IDF? Some separate prison authority? Not sure) but I'm more interested in how both Trump and Netanyahu clearly see routine brutality and fascist trolling as appropriate public behavior by government agents
