I didn't expect this damaged chrysalis to survive but I brought it inside to protect it from the cold just in case. Yesterday I went to turn off the lights in my orchid cabinet and got a surprise! I released him a little while ago.

My second successful monarch release of 2025, in Baton Rouge, La, both in December. I have one remaining chrysalis, which I noticed is damaged, so I brought it inside. Tonight I noticed it wasn't looking good; I'm not hopeful.

It took more than a day for this monarch to open. I hope it finds a sufficient food source, I still have 2 chrysalises hanging and a caterpillar trying to sustain itself on what's left of the milkweed after a short freeze. Baton Rouge, La.
