We had a big harvest moon earlier tonight. Large, orange and impossible to miss. It was nice to take it as I went to pick up my daughter to work.

Reminds me that the universe can be amazing and it is a big place to explore. Also reminds me to stop and enjoy life once in a while.

We were unable to print out 25 page slide deck for our final software project in university.

I went up and winged it with a single overhead for one hour. Much praise from the prof for the presentation. This was not the last time me team would "wing it".

Final mark was an A.

We should all tell our stories like this...mine is "the time I totally forgot about an essay and cranked out a paper on Deleuze & Guattari's Anti-Oedipus in two hours and ended up winning an award for it"

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

I do not know how this ends. Before that new senator got elected, they could stall any vote on the matter. Now, it just feels like an unavoidable ticking time bomb that is going to go off.

I would love to know what Republicans are thinking right now regarding this.

I could go into depth about this as I make content (stream, did a podcast).

The higher your rise, the more of a target you are. People will look for any excuse to cut you down. It doesn't matter if you are right either: the damage is usually all ready done.

Hence why I am happy to be a small fish.

I immediately went to Cenobites from Hellraiser, but you could argue they were first established in literature from Barker’s novel.

I have see the trend happen with:
- accounting
- law enrichment
- teaching
- cyber security

As @hacks4pancakes.com has highlighted, seniors in a field to have more empathy for rookies try to break in and understand things change… as well as we were all rookies once.

(c) we get an overstock of people wanting to be in the field
(d) education orgs pump out degrees and certs to take advantage of demand and drive up demand with instant job promises

A lot of good insights has me reflecting on the state of entry level cybersecurity positions. I feel it is part of a cycle.

(a) field has a decent number of positions and normal level of interest
(b) field gets popular so people start pursing it via education

That is a whole other kettle of fish and where a good mentor / supervisor can help.

I take care of my direct reports. I know which ones want to push their limits and some that are happy to just do the job. I am there to support each of them achieve their goals and never judge what they want to do.

I see so much gaslighting of people who are struggling to find jobs at junior and mid-level cybersecurity by folks who got their last job or first job before 2023. It's unreal and uncalled for. The market and the automation in the hiring processes have gone to hell. www.reddit.com/r/SecurityCa...

For those all ready in the field (title in the name) looking to go, I also tell them that luck is a factor and you cannot wait for opportunities; you have to make them.

Volunteer for training. Volunteer for that special project. Worst case scenario, you are going to at least broaden you knowledge.

I agree on the head swimming. I am at the tail end of my career (30 years in cyber) and I grasp to see what advice I can offer people apart from "Get your hands dirty", "Get good training" and "Network". Even then, that advice seems to be changing monthly for effectiveness.

Remember when Bart Simpson saying "Eat my shorts!" and "Who the hell are you?" was going to the downfall of society?

The era I lived in, where Backstreet Boys went number one selling things I bought at Tower Records, is over.

~Selling~ anything period in the era of streaming is pure anomaly. And Taylor Swift is that anomaly. She is maybe the last one.

And that is something special. Gasp of monoculture we imbibe.

The number of candidates with at least two years of practical experience was high, so the certs were kind of a tie breaker.

Of course, recognized certs from major players got priority while the “90 days to a job” certs were pretty much torpedoed.

I referred a junior resource to an junior cybersecurity position at our work and they did not get screened in for an interview. I inquired and was told they had nearly 400 applicants and had to set the bar very high for the cutoff (certs, experience, etc.).

When life sucks, I usually look at vacation selfies of my ride or die and I. Neither of us like having our picture taken, but I started a trend where I take a morning selfie of us before we go off on an adventure.

Last tip, she reminded me we didn’t take our selfie. Love her to the moon and back.

🧵 Back when the internet was cool, I used to collect phrases that sounded like band names. There was a website that would generate cassette tapes with whatever you wanted on it, so I'd make fake tapes for these fake bands. Just found a bunch of them while digging through Google Drive:
