It's time for IU to respect the value of its educators, and ensure faculty, staff, and graduate student worker compensation keeps pace with the cost of living and ensures that we can live and thrive. Fair compensation is essential to a world-class university.
iubaaup.bsky.social
At IUB, faculty salaries have not kept up with the cost of living. As the graph shows, relative to the cost of living, average faculty salaries declined by 10% between 2019 and 2025. Yet even with a vote of no confidence, Whitten's compensation has ballooned.
Line graph with the title "IU Compensation in Inflation Adjusted 2024 Dollars." Red line goes downward, representing faculty compensation; green line shoots upwards, representing IU President Whitten's compensation. More details in caption/description.

“Acquiescing to a Mailman compact would be a profound betrayal of your students, staff, faculty, the public, higher education, and our shared democracy—one that would irretrievably tarnish your personal reputation and compromise your institution’s legacy.” 🔥

"Should Universities work together to fend off the administration's attacks on academic freedom and free speech?" is a key question that rank-and-file faculty (i.e., @aaup.org) are answering in the affirmative and University administrators are mostly shrugging off. Time is running out.

Trump’s proposed “compact” with nine major universities “is extortion, plain and simple,” Erwin Chemerinsky writes in a guest essay. “It is not hyperbole to say that the future of higher education in America requires that every university reject it.”
Opinion | Trump’s ‘Compact’ With Universities Is Just Extortion
There seems to be no limit to the president’s odious attempts to control higher education.

Commenters from across numerous sectors say they fear that the new rule, which would require international students to get visa extensions, would be a barrier for the vast majority of students. https://bit.ly/3VKIeTV

This represents a direct and coordinated effort by state officials to police speech, pressure public universities into compliance, and enforce a politically motivated agenda on campus.

The firing of a Ball State employee was not just a university decision; it was actively driven by the state. Rokita used his office to publicly condemn her private speech, celebrated her termination, and leveraged a state-run website to publicly target educators.

"The university should be completely open to controversial topics and controversial speakers,” [IUB AAUP Chapter President David] McDonald said. IU’s platforming of some organizations or events, like Kirk’s vigil, and deplatforming of others, removes opportunities for dialogue.
iubaaup.bsky.social
IU's administration deemed a Palestinian art exhibit a security risk, yet allowed and promoted a vigil for Kirk, a controversial figure. This inconsistency raises questions about whether university resources are used to protect free expression or are instead privileging some viewpoints over others.

A must-read essay from Joan Scott: “We are again confronting a massive attack on the very foundations of democratic education and, this time around, the stakes feel even higher. In the 1950s, the targets were individual teachers…and their left-wing unions. Now the target is the system itself.” ⬇️

At a moment when higher education is threatened by forces that seek to destroy it and its role in a democratic society, the anticipatory obedience shown by this rush to judgment must be avoided.

For almost two centuries, the higher ed community has recognized that the presence of guns on campus inhibits the “practice of a responsible & critical mind.”

Guns rob faculty of the ability to ensure that the classroom remains the true & open marketplace of ideas at the core of academic freedom.
Legal Watch: Academic Freedom and Guns on Campus
The AAUP's recent joint amicus brief opposing the mandate that guns be permitted in college classrooms in Texas highlights a growing threat to faculty and academic freedom.
