The German charging industry is resisting all measures designed to increase competition and secure better prices for users, including the Deutschlandnetz tender, the Durchleitungsmodell, and local/regional tenders. It's a tough nut to crack, but an important structural issue.

The German charging rollout focus has shifted to DC charging hubs. A welcome addition, but not so much for affordability. Opportunities for (public) smart charging would also help to reduce costs.

Where you can charge and with what type of electricity also has a decisive influence on the TCO. In many cases, having your own charging facility and your own solar power is already advantageous.

In general, buying a car mainly involves depreciation. Keeping the same car for longer – or, although not examined in this study, but amounting to the same thing – a used car has a favourable TCO effect.

Initiated by (Green) Minister Habeck in the previous government, the tax benefit threshold for electric company cars has been raised from €70,000 to €100,000 since this summer. This is a segment where cost parity already exists at purchase, so is additional support necessary?

Interestingly, a purchase subsidy of €3,000 does not yet have a sufficient effect on vehicles priced below €40,000. The more expensive the vehicle, the smaller the cost difference between petrol/diesel and EV.

A "savings" option could therefore be to use the higher amount with a price cap.

Alternatively, subsidies for fossil cars could be reduced. A 2024 study for T&E found that, on average, such company cars receives a subsidy of €6,950 in Germany.
