It is so frustrating, isn't it! I grew to hate the '100% attendance' awards when I realised how ableist they are. Kids get ill. Especially when sick kids are forced into school.

That's such a good choice. We read Badger's Parting Gift, but our youngest was 7. That was a lovely reminder of the things our love ones teach and leave with us.

I found some knitting today that my mum had started a few months, I think, before she died. She was making a hat for my SIL. I can't knit so cannot finish it, yet I can't bring myself to frog it back and use the yarn for something else. Grief is a tricky bugger.
