I was painting this scene en plein air with a palette knife when the tree suddenly glowed in the last light. The low sun cast a flat horizontal sweep of light, beautiful but hard to capture with almost no tonal contrast.

I painted this Josh Clare landscape masterstudy in oil on office paper because I was too lazy to cut proper paper. It works for studies but it’s very absorbent, so you have to keep reloading the brush and the colors darken.
