I agree, completely. I also don't think the financial model of cycling is as broken as many think. A wage cap would be a good idea, and I'm not sure how sustainable Continental teams are, but that's a harder fix

This is the closest we've got - essentially 3,000 ticketed fans and a few hikers.
I can see it being a good draw for local authorities to close the road then split the revenue. I hate it, but
There's so much talk of the financial state of the sport, I can see it.

I can see this coming in slowly. Like when part of the Giro's final TT two years ago wasnt open to fans they could open it to a limited number of ticket holders. The concern is how much they'd actually charge

I can only go from what happens in the UK, where the organisers pay the police a hefty sum to keep the race safe - hence the sponsorship/cost being a huge issue without government backing. Is this the same in the Netherlands, or a different issue / system?

I think we'll see more of this across the board to be honest. Governments and major public bodies can get behind big events, but it's increasingly expensive and difficult to get the sponsorship and backing for smaller races

Calling it by it's Flemish name is quite a recent thing? Growing up watching Eurosport in the 00s it was never called de Ronde van Vlaanderen

Wellens, Navarez, Del Torro, McNulty if he comes in. It's 5.6km at 4%, it's not a difficult climb by any measure

Because the Cipressa isn't super hard and they have multiple guys capable of an effort to break the peloton apart up there?

I'm less convinced after that tbh

So like the Tour of Flanders was until a handful of years ago (with regards to km0 coverage)?

A half is incomparable to a marathon, I think. The marathon distance needs to be respected; you can't really bluff it like a half. Having said that, I think 30 miles a week for a few months should be OK off decent starting fitness depending on the goal. There's no substitute for miles though

Missed out the word 'style' - good point!

Absolute game changer when Pogacar turns up. Plus, Philipsen didn't win the sprint on Saturday, and there's some tough races that could end up in a sprint to come. So it's not quite as clear cut as the article makes out.

What about the years in the 80s when it didn't finish at the Velodrome?

UCI Continental Circuits really has a lot of appeal
