Book 13 of 2026: Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

Read this one on @goosegloriosa.bsky.social's recommendation. Very good! I'm not 100% sure Stephen King knows how a 9 year old lost in the woods thinks, but god damn if he didn't have me fretting over what was gonna happen to that kid.

Book 12 of 2026: @tdcloud.bsky.social's Ossuary

A group of sanctioned curse breakers venture into the Parisian Catacombs to rein in errant magic, but little do they know that the ossuaries entrap a secret darker than they suspect. This one takes a very unexpected turn that I loved!

I'm taken aback by how much I enjoyed this new Dracula movie. It is a prime cut of Grade-A Gothic Nonsense. It's fun to see a ridiculous b movie on the big screen; we used to have more kinds of movies in the theater other than "blockbusters" and "award-bait."

Book 11 of 2026: Melissa Faliveno, Hemlock

I was expecting something more "folk horror" from this, but imo it plays out like magical realism dealing with alcoholism and gender stuff. In the end it just felt...a little toothless? Maybe scared to commit to doing genre stuff? Good, but--too polite.

Book 10 of 2026: Ava Reid, An Archive of Romance

I'm fascinated by these "merch books" attached to novel series. This one is presented as an in-world document of the characters' relationship.

I'm rewatching Freddy's Nightmares, the horror anthology show from the 80s. Tonight's episode features a woman doing a strip tease at an ice skating rink. She then poses sexily on a murderous Zamboni. Peak television.

Book 9 of 2026: Jennifer Egan, The Keep

The Keep has a solid starting premise, but I ended up being lukewarm on this one. I found the protagonist a little unbelievable at points, and the book was a bit too metatextual for me.

Book 8 of 2026: Eric van Lustbader, The Ninja

You'll have to wait until the @badbooksbadppl.bsky.social episode drops to find out what I think of it, but let's just say it's the MOST Bad Books for Bad People book I've ever encountered.

Book 7 of 2026: @spookypurcell.bsky.social's The Silent Companions

I read a LOT of neo-Victorian Gothics, and with these you're always hoping for the extra seasoning that will set it apart from others in the genre. Friends, Laura Purcell delivers on the crucial unique elements. Highly recommended.

Even the cheap n cheerful horror comics I read are shitting on AI. Love to see it

Film 7 of 2026: Tilbury (1987)

On the surface, Tilbury is a folk horror movie about an Icelandic imp that can be used to provide food in times of hardship and scarcity, but beyond that it seems to be about a young swimmer's repression and his anxieties about the occupation of Iceland in WWII.

Book 6 of 2026: Agatha Christie's The Seven Dials Mystery

I wanted to read this ahead of the Netflix adaptation, now I've got my fingers crossed that the series captures the wackiness of the novel.

Film 6 of 2026: Honey Don't

It kinda feels like if a professional production filmed a high schooler's script with no changes.

Book 5 of 2026: Shaun Hamill's Solomon Kane: Suffer the Witch

I don't tend to read latter-day Howard pastiche, but I'm a mark for Solomon Kane as a character so I thought I'd give this a try. It really nails the sword & sorcery elements in the opening scene and is overall a pretty fun read.

Film 2 of 2026: Leptirica (1973)

Fun Serbian/Yugoslav vampire movie, rich in folklore, but I am not 100% sure I understood that happened at the end.
