After I literally just said I wasn’t giving a dime to the Democratic Party for the foreseeable future, this text arrives. The nerve to ask for money after 10 Dem senators voted yes on cloture today.

I just finished A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers, and it seems like the perfect read for a time when the world is in turmoil. If you want a moment of peace to spend with a tea monk and an inquisitive robot, this book is for you.

I just finished this behemoth of a novel. It’s a sprawling horror narrative about the evils of small towns, cults, and the complexities of family. Well worth the read. The Cemetery Dance edition is quite beautiful as well.

I may already have a favorite read of 2025: Patrick Horvath’s Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, which combines illustrated anthropomorphic animals with some cold, calculated murder.

The fall issue of Composition Studies is going to print soon! I'm so excited that this first issue my co-editor Zach Beare and I worked on is going to be out in the world soon. Cover art credit to Tim Becker.

The Peanut Butter Solution (1985). I believed i had fully imagined this movie until it was covered on an episode of How Did This Get Made.

Lord of Misrule (2023) is textbook folk horror (for better or worse)—a sort of mix of The Wicker Man and Wake Wood. Ralph Ineson should probably be cast in all the folk horror films.

This Wretched Valley: This debut novel from Jenny Kiefer has some really powerful horrific moments. As a former Louisvillian, I love it in part just because it was written by the co-owner of Butcher Cabin Books, but it doesn't need that bit of favoritism to make it worth reading. A great eco-horror.

Schrader’s Chord: What a powerful debut novel. I’m a fan of cursed object novels, and this book about cursed records did not disappoint. The narrative felt warm even when the content was chilly and creepy. Looking forward to reading what Scott Leeds writes next.

I looked to see if I could preorder (not yet, it seems), and I was amused by this image of one of your other books. Thank goodness the size of the book has been so well demonstrated!

I just list the titles with the date range. A description would undoubtedly be useful in different contexts, but for my day-to-day CV, I just go with this.

For the past few days, I've had lots of strange, intense dreams and morning headaches. If one of you is waging psychic war on me, I'd appreciate a brief pause in hostilities.

When you research and write about horror and it's Halloween, you represent an indie horror bookstore when you teach.
