⚠️ Hitchcock & John Webster?

Since the 1980s 'The emphasis in contemporary criticism...now foregrounds their modernity, and the self-conscious flair in which they invoke, investigate, and struggle with the artificiality and rhetorical potency of their chosen forms.'

👿 As with most Jacobean devils
...it always begins with 'just a joke'. 💀
Just a fundamentally evil, malevolent person. Rotten to the very core.

🎬 Dark comedy is one other mergence of opposites that makes Hitchcock a Jacobean artist... ☠️ 😘
Today I watched The Alfred Hitchcock Hour season 2 episodes 19 and 20. Anyone for Murder? was a really fun dark comedy with lots of twists. Even if it was a very common theme for these shows. Infidelity and muder plots.

Tonight in 1965 — Franchot Tone played a decrepit Vaudevillian w/ a teen bride on a chilling ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR based on a Robert Bloch story.

Body horror on mid-1960s TV! It's amazing what this show got away w/ thanks to the Hitchcock imprimatur. And they pushed further every season. #ClassicTV

Hitchcock challenged the Hollywood given - the fixed knowable character.
- For him, they could be removed even from 'themselves'.
I think Hitchcock considered “Shadow Of A Doubt” his favorite, also. I think there was a dichotomy within Charles - he genuinely cared about his family, especially his niece, Little Charlie. But that other side of him became more dominant to keep his secrets, no matter who had to be harmed.

"Vertigo" is such a great movie. The whole subtext of Jimmy Stewart's character forcing Kim Novak to become another Hitchcock blonde is almost too much to bear, though.

The only Christmas episode of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS aired this week in 1955.

Oscar winner Barry Fitzgerald (GOING MY WAY, THE QUIET MAN) stars as a parolee forced to work as a department store Santa.

Based on a story by Margaret Cousins. So good I wish it were a feature film. #ChristmasMovies
