Huge influx of new people, so this seems like a good time to do an introduction. Hi! I'm a writer in Portland, Oregon. You probably followed me because of political posts but in happier times I write a lot about spirits and cocktails.

Very likely, one of my favorite spots. Please say hi next time!

My week in Portland: playing for three futsal teams, playing tennis in a rose garden, biking to a sunset picnic, attending two concerts, and going to the opening celebration of a friend's new bar and restaurant. The president is lying about the city day after day to justify fascism.

When I wrote this it didn't occur to me to mention that the 100 coffeeshops I visited have windows, but I can assure you that those are things we use in Portland. slate.com/life/2025/09...
It’s Called America’s “Weirdest” City. But Just Wait Until You Hear What’s Going On in Its Coffee Shops.
Biking is just better with a caffeine buzz.

Oh no, I searched for recent articles mentioning bone luge and found this. MAGA has no culture, even their beef-laced drinking rituals are stolen from Portland restaurant trends of the early 2010s.

MAHA marrow eaters are causing a bone boom in D.C.

I would absolutely do this and pay money for the experience but I just realized that because I live on a ranch now I CAN DO IT FOR FREE

I don't have many posts from the old site I care about, but there is one bit of lore worth preserving here: an event that has brought joy to drinkers, confusion to witnesses, and disgust to American food writers. I speak, of course, of the invention of the bone luge.

If not for Twitter I would never have accidentally started a trend of people around the world, including Anthony Bourdain, drinking shots out of marrow bones, which has been an unexpected source of joy. Story: bsky.app/profile/jaco...

Cincinnati chili is the obvious answer for me, but Cincinnati chili pizza is the real winner.

(We only cooked this with the noodles on it this one time as a stunt, but without pasta it's actually a pretty great pizza topping.)

For context, this was after harvesting chanterelles in the forest, drinking fresh hop beers by the camp fire, and waking up to pourover coffee and espresso brewed by a fellow camper. PNW to the max.

I am armed and ready.

Apparently, Kristi Noem is in town today.

How should we greet her, Portland?

Another heartbreaking scene from war-ravaged Portland (all the toy stores were firebombed by radical leftists).
A shelf on a utility pole with a bunch of toys and a sign that reads "Friend swap! Take an item. Leave an item. Spread joy!)

Left was me, right was Jacob! Both in round pans hence the perfect shape. And he made both doughs so it was an unfair quiz. I just applied the toppings chaotically.

A tale of two pizzas. Which one was made by @jacobgrier.bsky.social and which one was made by me?
Two pizzas. One looks like a perfect red sauce pizza, the other looks like Picasso made pizza.

Cannot believe we are still waiting for Judge Immergut to make a decision here. Especially given what we heard in court yesterday. oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2025/10/03/f...

Displaced from war-ravaged Portland, we sought refuge in the Oregon forest and survived on foraged chanterelles.

Contra the headline, this is mostly a story about ranked choice voting leading to more diverse representation and arguably showing a moderating influence so far, and the "socialists" haven't really had a chance to change the city much yet.

Paraphrased: "I liked the parts about the quirky coffeeshops. I didn't like the parts pointing out that the person I voted for is calling the city war-ravaged and threatening to use the full force of the military against people living there, bringing that up is divisive."
