As it happens, I actually agree that the bar for obtaining telephone metadata is currently too low. But I guarantee that you can find a clip of virtually everyone who complained about the Smith subpoena denouncing anyone who said as much 15 years ago as a cop-hating paranoid terrorist sympathizer.
