This is the hardest I've ever known someone didn't watch the thing they were writing about
excerpt from an academic text I had to read in grad school: "Other shows for which the occupation is not blue collar or is not specified are set in working-class locales. The occupation of Hank of King of the Hill (1998) is unspecified, but the setting suggest a blue collar suburb."

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

I cannot emphasize enough that TRON: ARES is a pleasure to watch and to listen to, so much so that it almost (ALMOST) doesn't matter that it stars Jared Leto, who is not capable of the Keanu thing he's aiming for here. Reviewed: www.avclub.com/tron-ares-re...
Tron: Ares is a blockbuster from another decade, and that's not entirely bad
Tron: Ares has cutting-edge visual effects and snazzy digital cinematography, but some of its sensibility is oddly turn-of-the-century.

My brain has jettisoned everything it once knew about Uglies out of self-defense. All I remember now is how fun this review was to write
toplesstopics.bsky.social
This review does a good job of laying out the major flaws with Uglies, namely the cringey nonsensical premise and terrible pacing problems, with all these emotional outbursts from characters who never actually develop personalities when they're not crying or yelling. www.avclub.com/uglies-review
Uglies puts the “why?” back into “YA”
Joey King cannot escape the Netflix machine, as she leads the uninspired, dull, and confused YA adaptation Uglies.

Orwell: 2+2=5 is fantastic, a savvy modern reckoning from one of our best documentarians. In keeping with doublespeak, it will make you feel crazy and understood at the same time www.avclub.com/orwell-2-2-5...
Orwell: 2+2=5 adds up everything keeping you awake at night
With Orwell: 2+2=5, documentarian Raoul Peck cuts into our modern hell, using George Orwell as his scalpel.
