As a child, Garaile's soul was mixed with that of a Voidsent when the Voidsent attempted to possess his body as Garaile was dying. Rather than taking over, Garaile's aether absorbed the Voidsent melding them together into what some view as an abomination.

I'd say for all of them it's intentional, except in the early days Garaile (non WoL OC) didn't fully understand his powers in relation to sex.
