I met Dickie Bird several times waiting for degree ceremonies to start @sheffieldhallamuni.bsky.social. He attended these as often as he could, saying that to show up was the least he could do after the honour of being awarded honorary degrees. He was good company. A lovely man. R.I.P.

There's some truth that the sector is being killed by cuts. Each one has its own rationale, however robust and valid, but there's no overall assessment of the cumulative impact; and in England at least no-one with a duty to do this
