For those who don't know me, apart from a day job, I review translated fiction, primarily for The Irish Times. I also co-curate an annual poetry festival called Circling The Square. In the photo below, I'm talking with poets Thomas Lynch, Annemarie Ní Churreáin, Molly Twomey, and Louis de Paor.

Some fascinating items from “Out of the Box”, an exhibition of 75 years of the archives of the Akademie der Künste Berlin. The exhibition runs until January 2026, and we start with the Tin Drum from movie and novel with the same name.

It would be amazing if Greta Thunberg were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. She fully deserves it.
But I'll settle for some obscure person or organisation resposible for doing great work.
Anybody except the person who most wants it.

Greta Thunberg has more courage & moral clarity than any world leader I have ever seen.

Bar none.

Period.

That tiny 22 year old is often accused of being annoying, but what she is, is unyielding to moral ambiguity. If it’s wrong, she says so until someone listens.

She deserves the Nobel Prize

Way back when I was beginning to develop an interest in jazz, I was lucky enough to see a series called Women in Jazz, presented by Marion McPartland. One of those episodes featured Sharon Freeman and, of course, it's on YouTube at c.13.30"

What will happen if there's another revelation? For example, what would happen if Heather had to resign because it came to light that she had brought a cake to a church fete, claiming to have baked it herself, when it was in fact baked by a person who would tell all to Cormac Ó hEadhra on Drivetime?

Well I wasn't too far wrong, as we're now down to two!

Ireland is currently having a rather unusual presidential election campaign. Two of the three candidates appear uninterested in winning or know they are unqualified for the position. This leaves us with one candidate who has a real commitment to the role.
I just wish I agreed with her a bit more.

It's quite a surprise. But I think what he said yesterday, quoting his wife, indicated that they had decided that it was just too intrusive, and maybe they know of a few other unrefunded tenants that might have come to light.

I think the only election most of them will care about now will be the one for a new leader.

There's one man in Cork feeling a bit smug right now, and a lot of FF people who never understood why Martin rejected a faithful party member in the first place.

Anyhow, President Connolly will be a very interesting prospect.
jacqbetula.bsky.social
Wow! What a mess the whole thing is for Micheál Martin. He won't be Taoiseach for much longer.
The result of this will be that Catherine Connolly will now win, and Heather can continue with her rest which, I imagine, will be a great relief for her.

A lovely programme on RTE Lyric FM this evening in which poet Moya Cannon talked to people in The Burren and read some poems from her most recent collection.

Moya will read at this year's Circling The Square, on Friday, Oct 31st.

I watched Vermiglio during the week and would highly recommend it.

Even if I live to be 110, my final words will be, "But I haven't read all the books".

I have so much respect for Greta Thunberg because she easily could have coasted on speaking gigs and Davos appearances for the rest of her life

Yes, apart from the question I mentioned, I would like them to be asked about the kind of society they want to see in the country.
Either way, I have a dilemma. I either refrain from voting or vote with someone with whom I both agree strongly and disagree strongly!

It was disappointing that she wasn't asked the question I most wanted to be put to her:
"You have condemned Putin's invasion of Ukraine, but do you support Ukraine's right to defend itself?"

As someone with no interest in sport, I never heard of him until he was somehow chosen by Martin to run, and I still feel I know nothing about him. I just get the feeling that it will be a relief to him when he doesn't win.
Catherine Connolly is, I think, too close to the Wallace/Daly worldview.

The acoustic is quite dry because it was recorded during lockdown in an apartment, but this is a great version of one of my favourite songs, Kurt Weill's Youkali.
Sabine Devielhe, soprano.
Raphael Pichon, piano.
