Our statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling in Mahmoud v Taylor. Image thread with alt text. 1/4
Today's Supreme Court decision, though couched in the language of freedom and inclusivity, is a tragic failure for both the right to read and the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. Authors Against Book Bans stands firmly and fiercely against the decision and its rationale. To allow parents to "object" to the presence of positive books about the lives and rights of LGBTQIA+ people is to allow them to "object" to the existence of LGBTQIA+ students, parents, educators, and others in the wider community. You cannot “opt out” of reality, no matter what today’s majority opinion states. These books belong on shelves and these stories belong in classrooms and curricula.

Supremes say parents can opt out of letting their kids listen to LGBTQ stories. Can parents similarly opt out of kids listening to stories that DON'T have LGBTQ themes or incidents? 🤣

Fifteen years ago today, I became a published author. It feels impossible -- both that it's been so long, and that it happened at all.

Fifteen years, and somehow, The Shadows is still finding its way to readers. Happy birthday, little book. 🖤

I do not understand telling creatives to "shut up about politics."

One, this is life in this world. You can acknowledge being part of it, or you can pretend you're immune until you find out you're wrong.

Two, there are plenty of creatives doing the latter. If you don't like us, follow them 🤷‍♀️

A thought for the book clubs!

Set aside a little time at the start of meetings to fight for the right to read. Members send emails, sign petitions, write postcards. Research local candidates. 10-15 minutes tops & then onto the book, wine, fun.

Amplify your activism. Celebrate your community.

I’m going to write this novel and the next one and the one after and I have no clue if my agent will like them or be able to sell them or how much they’ll sell for or to whom or how well they’ll perform, but none of that matters because the only thing I can control is the work I put in. Let’s write.

My National Book Award-winning novel Last Night at the Telegraph Club was banned statewide in South Carolina because it includes descriptions of "sexual conduct." Why are book banners so scared of sex? I wrote about this in the @scdailygazette.com today.

Know what’s great about pre-ordering books (besides supporting writers and booksellers, obvs)? If you’re like me, by the time the book arrives, you’ll have forgotten that you ordered it, so it’s like getting a delightful surprise gift from a past version of yourself
