6 October is Fannie Lou Hamer's birthday.

"Former sharecropper Fannie Lou Hamer's Congressional testimony is so powerful that President Johnson calls an impromptu press conference to get her off the air. But his plan backfires."

The reasoning does not "remain unclear." Starbucks' own website says that they are closing stores all over the country as part of a restructuring, and Fox and Sinclair know it. The goal is to misinform viewers so that they blame Baltimore for these closures.

James Baldwin to Angela Davis in 1970, discussing white Americans:
Or, to put it another way, as long as white Americans take refuge in their whiteness— for so long as they are unable to walk out of this most monstrous of traps-they will allow millions of people to be slaughtered in their name, and will be manipulated into and surrender themselves to what they will think of-and justify—as a racial war. They will never, so long as their whiteness puts so sinister a distance between themselves and their own experience and the experience of others, feel themselves sufficiently human, sufficiently worthwhile, to become responsible for themselves, their leaders, their country, their children, or their fate. They will perish (as we once put it in our black church) in their sins—that is, in their delusions. And this is happening, needless to say, already, all around us.

The discourse on both sides of the Gifted and Talented conversation is annoying. I want to give a little context as someone who works on education stuff

“Exceptional Student Education” is the term more commonly used now for students who perform much higher or lower… 1/

I feel like this didn't get a lot of attention. Perhaps/hopefully that's because it's now well established that the Met is an unethical organization.

Lorne Michaels says this is also how people identify the best/their favorite era of Saturday Night Live.

There is also ample survey data that people of any age identify the time period when things were best, e.g. the Good Ol Days, as whenever they were 10-15 years old.

They weren't the Good Ol Days, they're whenever you were a kid. That's what you miss: being a kid.
Analysis | America’s best decade, according to data
When pollsters asked Americans when America had the best economy, most moral society or best music, one variable best predicted their answers. It wasn’t race, gender or politics.

The contraption on the pillar to the left of the Royal Farms entrance booms out a police-helicopter-like message, ostensibly to deter loitering. (This seems to have replaced their previous approach of playing classical music.) Staggeringly dystopian.

I should read this. I was way into Janáček in grad school, and I don't think I read her memoir at the time.

Curious (unhappily so) to know more about Janáček :/
