What's a cool little program that you made ages ago but are still using/updating?

One of mine is github.com/JadedBlueEye... - it's a desktop GUI for a unit-aware calculator so I can do all sorts of conversions on my desktop (including currency conversions)

A lot of folks know me for one or two posts, and might not know I've created nine (9!) visual explanations of computer science topics, aimed at practitioners.

If you're looking for things to read this Thanksgiving, I think you'll love them.

Computer science is a lot of fun, when explained well. ❤️

It's on apt. It's literally on Cargo. It's on DockerHub with ads. It's literally on nuget. You can probably find it on snap. Dude it's on portage. It's a Homebrew original. It's on pacman. You can download it on nixpkgs. You can go to pkgsrc and watch it. Log onto the Windows Store right now.

This post is worth reading regarding git. It does raise questions about the resilience of that history if it's only in GitHub pull requests, though.

Hey @ash.pink, do you have any plans with github.com/juice49/json...? ATM it's incompatible with verbatimModuleSyntax, which is causing some errors for me. Wanted to fix it + add some CI, etc

Being a Greta Thunberg doesn't need to mean getting up on TV either, doing advocacy is important, running that project you genuinely believe the world is better off with is important.

Do shit. Even when it looks impossible.
we need a lot more greta thunbergs and a lot fewer people who assess that things are getting worse and shut down

This very clearly articulates the massive incompatibility between AI as it stands and privacy and security
Worth a watch:

Head of Signal, Meredith Whittaker, on so-called "agentic AI" and the difference between how it's described in the marketing and what access and control it would actually require to work as advertised.

These researchers cooked and ate.

(Using slang as an anti-ai measure, brb once I rewrite my blog and put a filter on my Forgejo instance)
Turns out all the major LLMs (GPT-4, Claude, Gemini, Llama 3) struggle to understand Gen Alpha phrases, like "let him cook", "ate that up", "got ratioed", "secure the bag" etc. Research paper written by a soon-to-be 9th grader www.404media.co/ai-models-an...
AI Models And Parents Don’t Understand ‘Let Him Cook’
LLMs are not familiar with “ate that up,” “secure the bag,” and “sigma,” showing that training data is not yet updated to Gen Alpha terminology.
