Autumn magic in the Arnold Arboretum

My old trail loop in JP. Leaf-light filtered through branches like memory, a mix of sweat and nostalgia.

Boston in peak October.

This is not the way to cover traffic violence. "Drivers have killed a bunch of people in Boston recently, but it's still safer here than everywhere else!"

BOSTON —
Earlier Monday, a familiar but tragic scene at the intersection of Albany Street and Mass. Avenue: police surrounding a vehicle — in this case a Boston University shuttle bus — that had struck and killed a pedestrian.

That came just hours after a hit-and-run the night before in Jamaica Plain that killed a 77-year-old woman and left a 39-year-old woman in critical condition. Despite these tragedies, we found Boston's record is better than nearly every other city in America.

Federal data shows Boston had seven pedestrian fatalities in 2023, which is equal to a pedestrian fatality rate of 1.07 per 100,000 population, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

That's the second-lowest rate in the country after New York City, which had a rate of 1.03, according to the U.S. DOT.

This is Centre and Seaverns in JP. You can see that the flexposts are completely mowed down. And then you can see WHY

The way Boston uses flexposts are the problem. Vertical delineation is helpful but IT IS NOT PROTECTION
Flexposts have been flattened down in front of City Feed A truck is parked in the bike lane on top of the flexposts Close up of Ryder truck in the bike lane

I neglected to post this last week, but it's been 17 years (!!!) since I went down to Jamaica Plain to adopt the handsome cat I would dub Walter from the MSPCA.

He's been a wonderful grouchy friend, and astonishingly tolerant of a toddler's affections in his old age!
