I was born misplaced in my body, misconstrued, Put together wrong, improper and skewed. I looked at my reflection, convulse and obtrude, But there was something in my core, waiting to be renewed. It was a thumping deep within my chest, A melodic siren song beneath my horrid breast, A hook, a rhythm, a divine choir suppressed, Something inside me that’s gone unexpressed. It swelled, pressed against my inner lining, Plagued my waking life and sleep, stability declining, Forcing me to recontextualize, redesigning, Reevaluate my innards and start reassigning. In desperation, I tracked down a woodwind instrument, So I could articulate my truth, empty this shell and lament, Turn my pain into sound, deconstruct my birth and torment, Shed myself of my disfigurement and reinvent. But as I reached for the aulos, I was scolded by a star, A deadly, smoldering sun; A man, divine and bizarre, Apollo in his flesh, lifting his striking, gilded guitar, Sneered down at me, questioning my request to spar. And I shook my head no, I shuddered and I cried, His beauty, his truth, his skill known worldwide, I bewailed that I was snared and dissatisfied Because I was like him, and I felt the music inside. He denied me by my visage, demanded I prove him wrong, So, vulnerable and tremulous, I lifted the flute and played along, Pressed against the tip, experimenting with where I belong, And I brought the clouds to tears with the rawness of my song. But Apollo scorned me, scowling and confused, For I was not born like him, and for that I was refused. He grimaced, prayed, studied my body bemused, And then finally smirked, decided to make me disabused. Fearing the unknown, his passion and hunger lit anew in ember, And brusquely he gave the divine order to dismember, Retorted the name thrust upon me near the end of November, Told his muses to slit me to my center and prove I’m not a member. So they blasted my ribs with a mallet, fingered the skin of my breastbone, Gouged out my organ…
