Interesting nuance in the post-literate society discourse:

The OECD study showing falling adult literacy finds the decline is concentrated among middle-aged and older adults.

Young people’s literacy is *markedly higher* today than a decade ago.

Two things can be true at once.

1. Meta has long had a real problem of excessive moderation and censorship, mostly caused by its own automated systems, not fact-checkers

2. Zuckerberg is ending fact-checking now because it's the politically expedient thing to do for him and Meta

NEW: Keir Starmer takes a swipe at Elon Musk.

"A line has been crossed", he says.

“Those that are spreading lies… are not interested in victims, they’re interested in themselves....cheerleading Tommy Robinson... who went to prison for nearly collapsing a gang grooming case."

When the richest man in the world says something stupid, it’s not necessarily a news story.
Also, someone is feeding Musk inflammatory talking points about the UK.
Who is that person?
January 3, 2025 at 8:35 AM
It’ll be called “the elongation of Musk”.
If there’s ever a big scandal focussing on Musk, they’ll have to call it elongate.
He’ll be elongated.

Truth not stranger than fiction - official.

“The legal drama kicked off when Murdoch’s children watched an episode of [Sucession] in which the fictional heir of the fictional media empire discussed their PR strategy in the event of the patriarch’s death.”

Why Murdoch’s succession case could be major blow to his rightwing legacy
Court ruling could mean that more liberal Murdochs may have say in content from world’s most powerful conservative media empire

So Putin’s power play in Syria has finally failed. Good.
And how long before his other dominoes fall?
We must hope that the post-war settlement will have the interests of the Syrian people at its heart. But which of the regional powers will be working for that goal?

I think "kid killer" is the term we need here. The people who stop vaccinations kill our kids.
Dear BBC, please do not call anti-vaxxers “vaccine sceptics”. It implies there exists doubt about vaccines. 70-odd years ago we had large numbers of people paralysed or in iron lungs. We don’t see that today and for that we can thank the Salk vaccine.
