So that's 25% less of barely anything. Or in climate policy language: fuck all.

Thinking how best to summarise relationship between cumulative carbon dioxide emissions and functioning of Earth and social systems.

I am sympathetic to such sentiments. I don't oppose geoengineering research. But... articles like this are the most fantastical wishful thinking. Moreover, researching glacier repair isn't "doing everything we could" That starts with required emissions reductions.

New paper: In the era of overshoot, are climate risk assessments fit for purpose? by me & Mandi Bissett. What is geoengineering for? Beyond emergency climate response, is it an approach that effectively stops deeper action on the climate crisis?

It would be hilarious if it were not so patently wrong & dangerous. e.g. they show the huge spike in recent CO2 concentrations with not even mentioning where this spike comes from! 2/3

I finally found the time to take a look at the EPA's new climate change website, and... holy $h!t! This is how it describes the role of carbon dioxide concentrations, which comes last after changes in orbit & rotation, solar activity, albedo, and volcanism. 1/3

Every time I hear someone say "but we must" when it comes to scaling up carbon dioxide removal in order to stabilise the climate, I am reminded of Hilbert's "We must know. We shall know".

Compare government response to farmer's protesting to those that have simply held up pieces of paper protesting Israel's genocide in Gaza, or simply attending Zoom calls to discuss future climate protests.

It's not all doom and gloom for me - I won an award! No, not for best tuxedo (though I would have been in with a shout if that catagory existed). Last night I was very proud to receive the Greener World Award from Exeter's student Guild.

If you want to argue some progress has been made with reducing greenhouse gas emissions - OK. But stop framing it like this. The precision of 2.6°C completely misrepresents the *vast* uncertainties when it comes to climate & social responses & dynamics.
