Royal College of Surgeons points out delayed discharges, when patients r medically fit 2 leave hospital but cant cos there is no post hospital care package in place for them, hit highest level this winter last week. They warn this makes waiting list progress "feel like wading through quicksand"

Here are the 20 most challenged trusts on performance against the NHS's main elective target: % of patients waiting less than 18 weeks to start treatment. Princess Alexandra in Harlow is bottom (42%) v national ave 59%. Long term target 92%. Target for March 2026 is 65%.

Better news on long waiters: Number of patient cases waiting over 52 weeks drops again – down by over 10% from 222k in Nov to 200k in December. This is 2.7% of waiting list - lowest proportion waiting 52+ since August 2020. New target is for this to b c.70k by March 2026
