Pharmaceutical payments to general practices rose from £2.5 mill in 2015 to £7.5 mill in 2022. 54 companies made payments, but one company, Chiesi—marketing respiratory inhalers—accounted for >50% of payments since 2017

The payment growth and the dominance of one company raise concerns about bias

Yesterday the Dáil debated legislation to legally mandate public disclosure of payments from pharmaceutical & medical device company payments to healthcare professionals and healthcare organisations. It was refreshing to hear insightful contributions from government and opposition TDs

On Saturday, the Irish Times published a piece I wrote asking whether Novo Nordisk should be funding children’s playgrounds.

We need to ask if there are hidden costs to Novo Nordisk funding parts of our education and health systems, costs that may not be worth paying for.

Publication: We modelled the impact of post-2016 changes to prescription medicine co-payment charges and cost caps on out-of-pocket prescription expenditure

Mean annual expenditure for medical card holders reduced from €117 to €55. For the DPS-group, it reduced from €719 to €555
