Is this even a poem? Well, yes. Doing this activity increased my appreciation for Tolkien’s prose. There is such a rich variety of words and sentence structures on this single page.

In winter under all the rustling leaves Whose gold still lingered o’er the silver boughs, There is the sound of water running clear, And there I paused and harkened to the sound. It seemed to me the echo of a time When under shining flowers a voice would ring, Like elvish bells with sweet and crystal chime, To speak with wonder of the rising Spring. The world is older now, and faded gold With papery whispers waves above the stream, The wind upon my face is keen and cold And golden flowers only bloom in dreams. Suddenly, caught by the level beams, Frodo saw the old king's head: it was lying rolled away by the roadside. 'Look, Sam!' he cried, startled into speech. 'Look! The king has got a crown again!' The eyes were hollow and the carven beard was broken, but about the high stern forehead there was a coronal of silver and gold. A trailing plant with flowers like small white stars had bound itself across the brows as if in reverence for the fallen king, and in the crevices of his stony hair yellow stonecrop gleamed. 'They cannot conquer forever!' said Frodo. And then suddenly the brief glimpse was gone. The Sun dipped and vanished, and as if at the shuttering of a lamp, black night fell.

Thinking about this quote from Morgoth’s Ring and the concept of the long defeat. Defeat is not the end while there is still something in the world that is beautiful. #tolkien #luinellë
Melkor’s final impotence and despair lay in this: that whereas the Valar (and in their degree Elves and Men) could still love ‘Arda Marred’, that is Arda with a Melkor-ingredient, and could still heal this or that hurt, or produce from its very marring, from its state as it was, things beautiful and lovely, Melkor could do nothing with Arda, which was not from his own mind and was interwoven with the work and thoughts of others: even left alone he could only have gone raging on till all was levelled again into a formless chaos. And yet even so he would have been defeated, because it would still have ‘existed’, independent of his own mind, and a world in potential.

But there are also other and more profound ‘escapisms’ that have always appeared in fairy-tale and legend. There are other things more grim and terrible to fly from than the noise, stench, ruthlessness, and extravagance of the internal-combustion engine. There are hunger, thirst, poverty, pain, sorrow, injustice, death. And even when men are not facing hard things such as these, there are ancient limitations from which fairy-stories offer a sort of escape, and old ambitions and desires (touching the very roots of fantasy) to which they offer a kind of satisfaction and consolation.

Frustrated because last time I worked on this I was tired and missed some individual stitches. Filling them in is making things messy but it’s not worth it to undo things to make it perfect. Still, the first little house is almost done.

This is a great struggle. Have you read Middlemarch? If you have not, I recommend it as one of the most perfect things ever written, but it will spoil nothing to quote its moving final paragraph. It has been a comfort to me.
Her finely touched spirit has still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.
