The webs of winter-active spiders, in all their amazing variety, are spectacularly highlighted by frost, as well as dew. For more information on the types of capture webs constructed by different groups and species of spiders, see our Factsheet 7 at britishspiders.org.uk/factsheets.

Can you enlighten me please 😍

Pumpkin Patch Tarantula!🕷️🎃
One of the most incredible spiders in the world, this Tarantula (Hapalopus sp.) lives in the Ecuadorian Amazon!🌳

When people think of Tarantulas, we mainly think of large, plain coloured spiders, but in the neotropics we enter a world of colour!🧡🖤

@georgemcgavin.bsky.social Good morning G. I take great care of the live mealworms I keep to feed my garden birds and notice that some of the material I give them, they've started pulling fluffy bits off and now seem to be putting it in certain places. Are they doing this for warm bedding?

I've been trying to get a good vid of this amazing sheet web, with my hand to show you it's size... not sure if the owner is still resident in my greenhouse, which I really should clean out but there's so many spiders calling it home, I don't have the heart...

Male Greater Spotted Woodpecker who had managed to prize out of the feeder a chunk of suet block and was very happily pecking at it until he spotted me at the window and just flew away with the remaining chunk in it's beak 😆
I did wonder why the suet blocks were going so fast 😘 @rspb.bsky.social

Today’s #AutumnArrivalSpotlight is the ghostly Great Grey Shrike! 👻

A scarce winter visitor, it haunts open landscapes, scanning for prey from high perches.

Known as the 'butcher bird', it impales its catch on thorns...a spooky spotlight for Halloween! 🩸

How about some spiky spiders tonight? This one is Micrathena acuta, a spiny orbweaver found in the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest. It is believed that the spines serve as a defense from birds and even predatory wasps.

Hedgehog Harvestman Nemastomella bacilliferum, Plymouth, Devon, this very distinctive but tiny harvestman is found at several sites around the city. It has not been found anywhere else in the UK but may be overlooked? It is usually found sat on the underside of rocks lying on the ground.

A complete outrage 😡
Respect seems to be a vanishing trait these days. 🙁
I always treat them with the respect they deserve.
When I was a boy growing up in Ednburgh, we were taught to stop and remove our school cap if a hearse and cortege went past. A simple mark of respect.

I found this spider on the railings under the road bridge over the River Taff. Though it was sitting in its retreat, there was an orb-shaped web next to it, with a missing sector, but this doesn't look quite right for Zygiella x-notata. Thoughts please, spider people.
