it should be a tell about what's happening in the media now that most mainstream commentators seem openly frustrated that polling does not blame democrats for the shutdown

I mean you can "let it go" as in "not respond" but I haven't figured out how to "let it go" as in "not make me think less of the person's capacity for rigor" or "not break my heart/hope for humanity"

They only like religion insofar as it says "God says I can subjugate you because I'm his favorite special boy"

It's not religion it's solipsism

Or even "egregiously permissive judicial interpretations" which are very bad!! But it's not all of them, and abandoning the idea that the courts can play a role in preserving the rule of law is doing their work for them
jasonjdelaney.bsky.social
Also "if you want people to live in dense urban cities"--people do!! People already live in dense safe American cities!! If you build it, people will live there!! I mean obviously not that particular racist shitbird, but normal people will

Yeah the thing I was thinking about was when does "cost to maintain" turn into "let's see how little maintenance we can get away with" to "shut it down"
jasonjdelaney.bsky.social
This isn't true

It just varies a lot what he can get away with

In either case, though, new capital coming online starts driving coal out in a hurry--not just in energy but also metallurgy
jasonjdelaney.bsky.social
So the question here is when does electricity get so cheap (or carbon fees do expensive) that it's competitive to just mothball the old plant and build new?
jasonjdelaney.bsky.social
i'm much more familiar with petrochemical pathways--how is coal particularly useful in metallurgy?
jasonjdelaney.bsky.social
i don't see any way for coal to stay in the picture though, just too expensive to turn into chemicals
jasonjdelaney.bsky.social
i don't know if i'd say "useless". You can get polyester, PVC, polypropylene, acrylic fibers, etc., from NG liquids. A lot depends on the relative price, and I'd guess in the long run you find the industry coalesces around specialized uses of each based on comparative advantage and process costs

the wave of weaponized nostalgia for 90s-style multiculturalism and political correctness is gonna hit different

How are they less useful? All they ever tell you is if the effect is possibly zero or probably not zero, but you need magnitude and direction in any case to know if it matters at all

I wish I could explain to the "we're doomed" folk that it usually takes a long time for a species to go extinct. Understand? We're talking generations upon generations before the last human.

So if we're going to be around for a while either way, we might as well make things better instead.

It's wild when I look back over the last six months how I've just steadily replaced proteins with progressively cheaper proteins

A lot more sausage and peanut butter

Saw some post somewhere earlier about people “not getting” transness or whatever

You don’t have to get it.

If you believe in bodily autonomy for all, then no one needs you to understand their personal situation to earn being seen as a person by you.

You just treat every human being as a person.

Hmmm...I don't just know the fact...0.45*... Nah

Oh! 0.45 is 0.5 - 0.05 (nice! The same number shifted one decimal!)!

1/2 of 40 is 20, so

0.5 of 40 =20
-
0.05 of 40 =2

So, 20 - 2
= 18
Fun
