Clean Energy accounted for all electricity growth this year. Gas/Coal were basically a wash and will be for years to come for electricity generation.

We need to ramp up batteries because they are 90% cheaper than distribution grid upgrades which is the main reason we have rate increases.

China is moving forward with renewables at a breakneck pace, but Texas could be a counterweight as we install 15-20 gigawatts of wind, solar, storage and gas per year. Unfortunately, federal big government overreach and red tape are slowing down the Texas energy miracle. 1/2

What is going on with Electricity Bills?

Three main parts of a bill: energy (generation), delivery (transmission & capacity), distribution (getting to your house). Delivery and distribution dwarf energy as cost drivers.

So wonderful to join my friend @ayanaeliza.bsky.social on her podcast.

For the first time, new clean energy generation (solar, wind, nuclear) was added faster then new electricity demand (369Twh). That will now happen every year — globally.

For the first time, new clean energy generation (solar, wind, nuclear) provided more new GWhs then new electricity demand (369Twh). With continued exponential growth and new geothermal coming online at scale in a few years we should sustain this every year.

The electricity system is the largest commodity supply chain in the world that doesn’t feature storage. Every technology benefits from storage (esp Solar/Nuclear).

Top 1% of peak hours are 8% of your bill. Top 10% of hours are 40% of your bill
Batteries provide more tools to flatten out peaks.
Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

Want to reduce electricity bills 20% by 2030?

Release the data! We have over 37GW of batteries, water heaters, etc that can participate in demand flexibilty. But without data access they can't bid into the PJM/MISO capacity auction to bring down costs.
Smart meters were all the rage in 2009 (aka Advanced Metering Infrastructure, AMI) and even then most of us knew they were unlikely to bring any real benefits for residential customers. Little did we know that Utilities using rickety Oracle and SAP systems would create a crisis. 🧵

The Fed just admitted we’re in stagflation.

Powell said it best: "Risks to inflation are tilted to the upside and risks to employment to the downside, a challenging situation."

The economy is weakening, folks are losing their jobs, and inflation remains persistent.

The monopoly utility business model stretches back over 100 years. It was phenomenally successful to bring electrification to the masses, but does it meet our current needs? Lynne Kiesling and I dig into that in part 1 of 2 here:

For a long time renewable energy uptake in Africa was lacklustre at best.

But that is changing: Solar panel imports to Africa have surged over the past year—a shift poised to touch nearly every country on the continent as new Ember analysis shows.
