Housing discrimination undermines a fundamental right and generates distortions that limit collective prosperity.

Today we are happy to publish in Social Forces an article on this phenomenon using experimental methods!

Rental housing discrimination against Chinese minorities in Spain: a new instant messaging correspondence test

The takeaway:

👉 Accommodating the radical right on immigration doesn’t win back voters.
👉 It alienates the progressive base.
👉 And it raises the salience of the very issue the radical right owns.
In short: it’s electoral self-harm.

2️⃣ While most previous research has focused on the so-called “first generation” of immigrants, we also designed a way to test discrimination against their children. We find that descendants of Chinese migrants face much less discrimination than those perceived as newcomers.

If almost 90% of landlords replied the "Spanish" candidate with an invitation for a visit to the house, the response rate (RR) went down to the 81% fo "Chinese candidates"

❗Roughly 1 in 10 landlords discriminated the Chinese candidate

1️⃣ For the first time in the field, we used WhatsApp for a correspondence test.

We created two fictitious accounts: a “typically Spanish” person one, and another of a “typically Chinese” person. With these profiles, we contacted 1,600 landlords in Madrid and compared response rates.

Together with Maria Brandén and Erik Rosenqvist, we show that distance to higher education shapes academic aspirations in Sweden—well before their university education begins. (1/4)
The Spatial Determinants of Academic Aspirations: Evidence From Sweden
Differences in access to higher education are a well-known contributor to socioeconomic inequalities. Yet, despite considerable interest from policymakers, we know little about the processes linking ...

Using @lisdata.bsky.social data, I plot wealth inequality against income inequality and the wealth-to-income ratio: how much wealth a country has, relative to the size of its economy. As expected, there's minimal relationship between the Gini index for marketable wealth and that for income
javiersanmillan.bsky.social
🌆We also analyzed the geographic scale of segregation, discovering that it mostly unfolds at the micro-scale

However, the scale of segregation varies by income (and city!): the poorest tend to be segregated over larger areas, while the rich are clustered in tight enclaves
javiersanmillan.bsky.social
Meanwhile, the poorest have become the most spatially segregated group.

In 2011, the rich were more segregated.

By 2022, that had flipped: the poor are now more isolated—likely due to the residualisation of social housing.

Inequality and segregation may look stable overall—but who holds income has shifted.

In 2022, the top 1% in the average Dutch FUA earned 5.17% of total income, an increase from 2011.

📈 That gain came largely at the expense of the upper-middle class.

Contrary to expectations, income inequality and residential segregation have remained stable—or even declined—in most Dutch cities over the last decade

❗️But there is a lot of variability, suggesting that local particularites matter

🚨Publication alert🚨

Most studies on inequality & segregation focus on big cities—assuming a universal rise. But what if we look beyond the usual suspects?

We analyse 35 Dutch urban areas over 12 years using geo-coded microdata to uncover patterns hidden in national debates.
