American Society of International Law Regarding United States Action in Venezuela In recent days, the Trump administration has demonstrated again its disregard for international law, violating the UN Charter's prohibition on the use of force by attacking Venezuela and abducting Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. In the process, the administration has also violated United States law, which at a minimum requires consultation with members of Congress before involving US armed forces in attacks like the one the world has just witnessed. Nicolas Maduro unlawfully claimed power after his country's most recent election. He has exacted untold brutality and suffering on the people of Venezuela. Bur this does not justify the Trump administration's unlawful actions. The Society will continue to educate Americans-including members of the administration and of Congress-as to the responsibility of the United States to act consistently with, and prevent further violations of, international law. The aspiration of the Venezuelan people for a return of democracy is commendable and must be respected. But democracy in Venezuela should not be, and is unlikely to be, advanced through the abdication of respect for international law. Michael D. Cooper, Executive Director & Executive Vice President.

Maybe because cases are currently mainly children & young people? University students going home & extended family mixing over Christmas might be expected to spread it to older, more vulnerable people? Add in colder weather & #WinterPressures could be intense by New Year, without behaviour change?

Good to see UKHSA advising everyone to open windows to help stop the spread of airborne infectious diseases! But they are still over-emphasising handwashing, despite #UKCovidInquiry criticism of Government failures in communicating relative risk.

Perhaps they could serve them in the prisons of El Salvador, which have become so recently famous for such lovely conditions!". Context: The Trump Administration deliberately provoked a Constitutional crisis by ignoring a court order intended to halt the trafficking of a group of Venezuelans into indefinite detention & slavery in El Salvador, where prisons are notorious for human rights abuses. In this post, the US President implicitly acknowledges the reputation of prisons in El Salvador, & threatens to similarly "deport" US citizens involved in the "Tesla Takedown" movement who are exercising their legal right to protest against Elon Musk and his DOGE organisation, who are illegally shutting down government agencies, firing federal employees & stealing data on millions of regular Americans.
