I had never embraced social media. No apps. No, thank you.

Then, on the same day, I started a newsletter and a Bluesky.
Why?

I care about the quality of our attention. That’s all any of us have, really.

Our attention. Our noticing.
Guard these with your life.
They are your life.

Also, books.
I prefer paper books, but I think it’s a real treat when an author reads their own work for the audio.

Thanks, Timothy!

Reading your own book is an interesting process. More than I expected, you relive the emotions – amusement, frustrating, anger (how the f*ck did it get this bad?) – you felt when writing...

We made it to 2025! There is already SO much to face, so much to fight.

We can do this.

To prepare for upcoming events, I am going on walkabout.
In a few days, I will be logged off and in wanderlust mode for…several days? Perhaps a few weeks.

When I return, things will be different. Be ready.

When disaster strikes, the loss of life is joined by the loss of art, literature, music, and the architecture of culture.

Eyes on the Earth over at NASA provides some valuable information. They have also recently added a quick link to info on the LA fires.

Even if you aren’t a researcher or an academic, try learning something new over there. You won’t regret it!

Hey readers if you get my books from the library….THANK YOU! Libraries are wonderful! Authors do get paid when our books are in libraries and it’s a way to get our books in the hands of readers who might not have picked it up otherwise. Thank you for using the library, keep it up! Libraries rock!!!

Librarians are always on the lookout for creative ways to serve the community.

Librarianship is a form of love.
It is a calling and a deeply ethical mission.

Thank your local library and visit often!

Looking for a way to help with ease the burden of the LA fires?

Charity Navigator rates many thousands of charitable organizations on a range of categories (transparency, for instance).

They currently have a catalog of charities doing work in/around the affected areas:

Once again, Katharine nails it! Don’t give in to cynicism.

We. Can. Do this.
I’m a scientist who studies how climate change impacts our lives and the places we love.

Most of us are worried, but many feel stuck on what to do. If that's the way you feel, check out this list below!

We can’t fix it alone, but I know we can together. 💚

The human species has survived plagues, geological upheaval, civilizational collapse, and so much besides.

Not long ago, we looked up at the stars and wondered, “What are those? What’s going on up there?”
Now, we have telescopes peering into the past. We can eradicate diseases.

We can do this.

The world is complex and sometimes it will be more difficult to arrive at a conclusion than you had originally thought.

That’s okay.

I tell my students to fight the urge to make everything a “hot take”. It’s okay to say, “I need to slow down here. I want to get this right.”
I hate that fact checks now require fact checking, but please, fact check your facts checks.

Just because someone says it is a fact check doesn’t make it a fact, and it doesn’t mean they checked.
