#Inferno. 1980. Dario Argento usually worked with Goblin or Ennio Morricone for his film scores — but Keith Emerson (of Emerson Lake & Palmer fame) absolutely nailed the “Mater Tenebrarum” theme here

The sinister shadow people in Dario Argento's INFERNO (1980). Some interpretations describe them as being different forms of Mater Tenebrarum.

Levana, the forgotten Third Mother in Luigi Cozzi's THE BLACK CAT (1989). Her appearance actually brings to mind Mater Tenebrarum, Our Lady of Darkness from Thomas De Quincey's SUSPIRIA DE PROFUNDIS.

They really said “what if the Tall Man was Wonka’s Grandpa Joe” and it’s one of my new favorite horror performances ever.

a favorite outing of his for me is Dead & Buried (1981) superb little horror flick in the vein of The Fog

Gary Sherman’s Dead and Buried (1981) is an absolutely perfect little horror movie. Sort’ve a sleepy Re-Animator in Murder She Wrote’s Cabot Cove, a sweet spot between Messiah of Evil and The Fog just oozing with rural seaside evil and mood to fucking spare. Small town apocalypse at its best!

Stan Winston’s effects and prosthetics are to die for (and you will!), barely a dust mite of age on the horrific murders and ruined corpses, but the whole thing is astonishingly timeless! The dabbling in snuff/found footage especially is bone chilling and wicked work, lost none of its staying power!

Jack Albertson went out as a horror king, easily one of my new favorite performances in a spooky flick. He really pulls the vicious deaths and rising realization of terror together with a kindly voice and sinister sweetness. Run, don’t walk, to this one! A Halloween gem!
A crowd of people, all with cameras, brutally burning a man alive Jack Albertson, an older man with thick glasses A wrecked car pulled out of the sea A burn victim, completely wrapped in gauze, staring helplessly as a needle is speared into his eyes

It’s a little more straightforward than that, but then makes the moments where it’s REALLY weird and oblique more visceral and strange. Halloween meets Re-Animator, Something Wicked This Way Comes as genuine Lovecraftian cruelty.

Phantasm II (1988) plays such a fun trick of “Right Where We Left Off” a full decade after the first, only to slam on the gas and rocket well past the trance state and smoking mirror of grief into pure horror action. Ludicrously funny as it is absolutely Godfucking disgusting. An utter blast!
A golden sphere, blades extended, lodged jn the destroyed throat and jaw of a victim “BURN IN HELL” written in red over a boarded building Three of the Tall Man’s spheres The Tall Man melting and goopy, his eyes exploding

What it lacks in the dreamy mourning process and eerie music it MORE than makes up for by just being a fuckin’ hoot and half. Guns and gore, chainsaw duels and gnarly splatter. Gorgeously shot as the original’s small town Revelation sprawls into a rancid rapture, unseen, claiming the whole world.

I think the original’s twisted Invaders of Mars Meets Lovecraft temperament and pace is more timeless (in archaic fever), and the music is too missed, but I honestly love this one more!! Astonishingly funny, silly and slimy, and Angus Scrimm delivers the goods with aplomb. It looks SO good, too.

Very special movie. Its use of theatrical sets and painted backgrounds transcends its budget, and with the unnerving music it almost becomes this dark mirror of The Wizard of Oz. A grasp of surrealist form you don’t often see commended in genre fare. Mars’ Night of the Hunter. A trance film.
A woman in her morning bathrobe running from a hillside fence amongst sparse trees A young boy in a glass box menaced by the Martian commander, a disembodied head with tentacles in a glass sphere Two massive Martians carrying unconscious humans amongst the minimalist emerald set The young boy in a minimalist and eerie police station

Confidently one of the weirdest horror flicks ever made. Following Halloween’s small town nightmare with Invaders From Mars’ surrealist stroll and entrapments of layered dreams, and SO much meaner. A bizarre little nasty of subtle perversions and a cruel smirk at grief’s expense.

That MUSIC.
The red-tinted vision of the Tall Man’s silver spheres A sink drain The Tall Man A Hellish landscape of barren wastes and a red sky, a caravan of the Tall Man’s minions marching off into the horizon
