Two thoughts about Kalin's visit to Damascus.
1) Beyond the official statements that local actors led the rebel offensive that led to the fall of Assad, Turkey wants to signal to observers outside and the domestic audience that Ankara holds the cards.

This book by Eckart Frahm is AMAZING.

I couldn’t recommend it more highly. A great intro to cuneiform culture, and deep dive into ancient Assyria — queens, warfare, palace intrigue, far-flung trade. It’s wonderful.
