Panel 1 at #CellBio2025 done! (And forgot to mention I was on a panel - whoops)

Thanks Mike Boyce and Monica Quiones-Frias for the invite and the 100+ people in attendance asking questions about the transition to independence.

Was very fun being on a panel with my friends in academia and industry!

Powerful words from Dr. Bryan Dewsbury (@dewsbury.bsky.social) from the #CellBio2025 Education keynote:

“When I stand in front of a classroom, I tell students that I am interested in being more than their destination to a final grade”

First science session of #CellBio2025! 🧫🧪

Co-organized by @iaincheeseman.bsky.social and @abbybuch.bsky.social on the importance of the physiological context on studying cell biology. As a big fan of the ECM, I couldn’t agree more!

Packed room for the opening mentoring keynote by Maggie Werner Washburne talking about the importance of imagination in science and persistence

All of this is reminding me of when I was on a panel at the 2023 San Diego Comic Con. The panel was titled “Dr. Evil: Scientists as Supervillains” and one of the questions we were asked was what would be our villain origin story.

I didn’t really have an answer back then but I do now.

Closing out my postdoc with a bang! I’ve been selected as 1 of 10 Young Investigators dedicated to #RareDisease research for this year’s draft!

It’s a true football style draft (😅) and I’m going to the Link! 🦅

Hello San Diego!!

Excited to be here for #CellBio2024!

I’m co-chairing 2 sessions and have a poster - and after the science and art session, I’ll be at the #SciArt show!

Come learn about my science, @thegardinerlab.bsky.social plans & opportunities, and my #SciComm #comics!

Crocheting a model of a cell sounds like a cool and challenging thing though… 🤔

This was way nicer than I expected!

But yes I’ll remind you about alt-text and I use emojis as punctuation online 😂

(3) My combination of science and illustration also makes me a science communicator. I’ve got to do this in a variety of venues from classic outreach to linking science an pop culture at San Diego Comic Con to talking to folks at a life size 3D printed statue of myself (😅)
November 20, 2024 at 5:40 PM
(2) I’m a self-taught illustrator! I co-founded @jkxcomics.bsky.social in grad school to get science out from behind paywalls and remove the jargon so more people can have access and exposure to science.

Next year I’ll be a #NewPI: an Assistant Professor at Tufts University starting my own lab wanting to understand how viruses affect fibroblasts and that fibrous network (called the extracellular matrix) to make an environment supportive for cancer to flourish.
November 20, 2024 at 5:31 PM
What I do: A lot of things! (1) I’m a scientist by training. I did my PhD w/ @natesherer.bsky.social studying how HIV spreads btwn cells and postdoc w/ @tme-caf-ecm.bsky.social studying how the non-cancerous cells called fibroblasts and the networks of fibers they secrete support pancreatic cancer.

A few fun facts:

I love cartoons and comics and rarely watch things with actual humans in it.

I have no attention span for movies and I will disappoint you (no, I have not seen Star Wars or LotR).

I’ve never had a cup of coffee.

Crochet fiend (I track/graph progress).

Proudly left handed.

Woke up to over 2k followers - thanks! And hi! I should probably do a reintroduction.

Who am I: A generally positive and goofy person that’s very empathetic. I care about improving things in whatever little ways I can including making things accessible (add alt-text reminders for photos/GIFs!) 🧪🐡
