This was Vin Scully's call of Henry Aaron's 715th home run. Tonight Major League Baseball cut off the first sentence, starting it with the "What a marvelous moment" part because they don't want to anger the white supremacists who run our country and of whom Rob Manfred is an ardent supporter.
"A Black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol. What a marvelous moment for baseball. What a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia. What a marvelous moment for the country and the world.”

In today's newsletter: to say I was unimpressed with Dave Roberts for dodging a question he and every person associated with MLB should've expected for the past two and a half years would be an understatement.

You may recall that the 2021 All-Star Game was supposed to take place in Atlanta. But in between the time time it was awarded to Truist Field and the game actually happening, the State of Georgia enacted some absolutely ridiculous laws. Laws that were transparently aimed at keeping Black people, poor people, and people who live in blue places like Atlanta from voting. A lot of people didn’t like that and they pressured businesses, including Major League Baseball, to boycott the state. Major League Baseball actually listened to those who took issue and moved the 2021 All-Star Game to Denver. Nothing has changed in Georgia since that decision was made. The laws that led to the outrage and the moving of the All-Star Game are still on the books and are still being enforced, suppressing the vote. Which is why it was so notable when, in November 2023, Major League Baseball announced that the 2025 All-Star Game would take place at . . . Truist Field in Atlanta. It's being played tonight in fact. The press release issued to that effect made absolutely no mention whatsoever of the Georgia voting law or Major League Baseball’s decision to move the 2021 game. No one connected with Major League Baseball has said the first thing about it since. And it's not because they weren't asked. Indeed, I asked them myself the day I got that press release and got no response whatsoever. If any other baseball writer asked that question of Major League Baseball they didn't get it answered either, because I can find nothing substantive written about MLB's Atlanta about-face in any mainstream baseball media outlet in the 20 months since Atlanta was re-awarded the Midsummer Classic. I presume Major League Baseball figured no one cared about that decision anymore because they pretty obviously did not prepare anyone to answer questions about it. I know this because yesterday, Friend of the Newsletter Jen Ramos Eisen, who is reporting from the All-Star Game in Atlanta this week, asked that question of Dodgers/NL All-Star manager Dave Roberts during a pre-Home Run Derby press availability that was hosted by ESPN's Pat McAfee. You can watch the whole exchange in this video, but if you'd rather not, here is the question posed by Ramos Eisen to Dave Roberts: The All-Star Game was moved out of Atlanta in '21 because of a law that former President Biden described as "Jim Crow in the 21st Century." Dave, in 2021, in an MLB Network Special you said, "it's about being relentless with our voices, and speaking up. And this is not an isolated moment, and it needs to be something talked about on an on-going basis, and being relentless with it." What happened to being relentless with our voices, and why are we in Atlanta when this law is still on the books? As soon as Ramos Eisen asked this of Roberts, McAfee jumped in, saying "I think that's a political question," and attempted to ham-fistedly vamp like a kid at a spelling bee asking for a repeat, definitions, and the use of the word in a sentence. As McCafee scrambled to keep Roberts from having to answer it, he made a point to say that neither Roberts nor Aaron Boone "are lobbyists," for whatever that's worth, and otherwise sorta lost his shit. Ramos Eisen repeated the question. Eventually, after more vamping, McAfee threw it to Roberts, who gave a non-answer of his own: I think Pat answered it perfect, and honestly. Um, I appreciate the question, I appreciate your thoughts. Um, I do feel that I'm excited to be here. I think that it's ah, a, a great city. I think baseball fans are excited to be here and celebrate these great athletes. I, um, I'm not a politician. I do feel that everyone has their right to voice thoughts. But right now I just really choose to focus on the players and the game and be excited to be here. And for me, to be able to manage these guys. I'm honored. To call that answer an exercise in abject cowardice would be an insult to abject cowards. It'd be one thing if Roberts were merely catching a stray there, and if he had never publicly opined on the 2021 Atlanta decision, but as Ramos Eisen noted in their question, and as this April 2021 MLB dot com article made even clearer, he had. Indeed, he enthusiastically voiced his support of the game being moved, saying "I applaud [Major League Baseball] for being proactive in this case." Now, though? He's just happy to be here.

The Aaron tribute was a great idea and was otherwise nicely done, but hacking up Scully's call was an utter disgrace. Everyone involved in that decision, be they with Major League Baseball or the Fox network, should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.
