I play a lot of board games. I also write for American Chess Magazine. Sometimes I'm a psychology professor.
A wonderful tribute to GM Daniel Naroditsky in the latest issue of American Chess Magazine. Rest in peace, Danya.

Interesting article... over a third of the class used AI to write their papers for them. It's rather depressing for those of us who would like our students to actually think about things. #PhDlife #ai

Barb and I have now played 20+ games of Trajan, mostly 2-player. It's a fun, complex, point salad of a game with a thin Roman theme. The +2 extra action is a great opening tile, especially when (frequently) combined with a useful extra action tile from the forum. #boardgames

What is the secret to improving at chess? Quite a lot of effort actually... In particular, you should play a lot of games, read and study chess books, and solve a lot of puzzles. #chess #chesspunks

November was a good month for gaming. In addition to a lot of chess, I got a chance to play Antiquity for the first time. I really like these old style, heavy, highly thematic board games. #boardgames #bgstats

1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations by Fred Reinfeld, first published in 1955. An essential training manual for several generations of chess players, until online puzzles became widely available in the early 2000s. #chesshistory

I just started reading the first book of a new epic fantasy series, Malice by John Gwynne. Slightly reminiscent of Game of Thrones, with its multiple points of view, but not derivative. Really good so far! 🪐📚

I got a chance to play Oceans this month. Very nice. Probably the best game in the Evolution series. #boardgames #bgstats

The new app doesn’t look that different at first glance, but it’s a big improvement over the old one. I especially like all the new options for fine tuning your puzzle training. #chess #chesspuzzles

Video of GM Patrick Wolff doing De Groot's chess memory task in 1998. He makes almost no mistakes for a typical chess position, but has poor memory for a position in which the pieces were randomly placed. It's a nice demonstration of the power and limitations of expertise. #chess #psychology
