My cousin (we are not close), who was struggling with substances, once asked me if he could stay with me at my 650 square foot one bedroom. If I had more space (and space that would ensure he wouldn’t steam my stuff to buy drugs) I may have felt like I could say Yes.

It’s hard to help out your family when you’re squished into 650 square feet at $2000/month rent.

The connection between housing prices and homelessness is, in large part, because when housing is expensive, people don’t have a basement or an ADU for their troubled family member who is between houses to sleep in while they get back on their feet.

Or, you know, the normal doings of American government.
