Today's news is a good excuse to remind everyone that Rinzler's Making of Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi are surprisingly candid and warts-and-all for authorized coffee-table books, to the point that it's kind of amazing that Lucas ever okayed them or that Disney has allowed them to stay in print.

The recording and transcript of Kershner, Ford, Fisher, and Billy Dee hammering out the carbon-freezing chamber scene in real time is so fucking fascinating. Like, they were making an actual movie. Figuring shit out. It's so easy to forget that this stuff didn't just emerge fully formed.

Kaminski's Secret History is an entertaining work of amateur research, too. Both he and Rinzler do an excellent job of putting these movies back in their proper context, which is something that was already getting lost by the mid-Eighties.
