I imagine Applebaum means this rhetorically, but in case others really are wondering: turf, oil, China, and, probably the biggest distinct factor, the wildly outsize influence of the Nigerian Christian Right in the US Christian Right. One element of the attack was fan service for fundamentalists.

Independent journalists need to fill the void left by the corporate media outlets that have been bullied or bribed into becoming propagandists and apologists for the fascist Trump regime. Our democracy depends on it!
There is a tremendous opportunity for a brand new generation of media outlets to rise up right now because many news outlets that spent decades painstakingly building their credibility are seeing it torched by bootlickers with incredible speed.
