My hope though is that it comes at a point where we can really consider writing as mass-produced versus meaningful and thinking of writing as both art and skill

Tough to say! The assignment (and discussion of AI) come toward the end of the semester after they’ve spent weeks learning the PR writing formats, expectations, etc. so they’ve had to be pretty engaged with the writing overall 😂

I’ve done one where they need to use AI for producing multiple versions of an announcement for different channels (broadcast, social, etc) but am grappling with how to add a more critical perspective and element to AI this semester

I'm going too long here but the point is folks being silenced, harassed, etc in spaces claiming to be part of the public sphere is not new; folks leaving to create their own alternative spaces for deliberation is not new; this is the reality of public struggles over communication, power & difference
