It's just a silly, silly situation where people love the books, publishers make money from books, yet the people who write the things aren't valued at all.

I'm looking at my various meagre income sources (tax return). I need to stop doing some things. Assuming I can't stop caring for my disabled kid or my elderly parent, from a return on investment point of view the thing that I should really stop doing is ... *checks notes*... writing books.
