Who wouldn't tune in to watch @StephenCurry30 vs @KingJames or @JaMorant vs @shaiglalex? Imagine @MELOD1P vs @wemby? This is the all star game format we want. @NBA please make it happen!

In my opinion they should have leaned into their stars and help fans settle the debate over who the best player is by creating a 1-on-1 tournament - seeded by total number of all star votes.

The @NBA dropped the ball with their new all-star game format. Fans hated what the game had turned into, so now they decided to give us even more of it.

At the end of the day you want create serendipity, but have your customer feel as though they arrived at their decision on their own. If you can pull that off, you will have truly provided the magic that lies in marketing.

So as marketers, I believe the best path to "getting married" is to play on the periphery of serendipity. You need to be visible, but also out of sight. You need to create experiences that feel surprising and magical. You need to wave your magic wand from behind the curtain.

Serendipity needs to feel present.

Buyers believe and want to feel like they are in complete control of the buying process. And that's fine. You can introduce yourself in the beginning and you can ask someone to marry you at the end, but getting someone from beginning to end is tricky.

I believe you can impact the top by ensuring that a customer knows you exist. There are a lot of ways to do this. I believe you can impact the bottom by converting a hand-raiser. But the middle is pretty messy. So I deprioritize it initially, but come back to it strategically

When thinking about how people buy SaaS products today, I believe there are limitations to what a brand can do to generate demand across the full funnel.

Much like there’s a huge market for retro analog technology like record players, I wonder if there’s a market for retro digital tech/software/social media. Instagram 1.0, og twitter & Facebook. Heck throw 4sq in there. Turntable.fm just reappeared. What’s next?
