Tyler Robinson told a roommate that the inscriptions he’d engraved into four rifle cartridges he left behind after fatally shooting Charlie Kirk were “mostly a big meme,” court documents released Tuesday show. One of the etchings — spelled in the documents, “NoTices Bulge, OWO What’s This?” — referenced a comic making fun of furry role-players that has become an online meme. After the shooting, Robinson said in a message to his roommate that if he saw the message on Fox News, he “might have a stroke,” federal investigators wrote. The exchange further reveals the depth into which Robinson, 22, was immersed in internet meme culture before the fatal attack. The engravings on three other cartridges carry inscriptions with similarly online roots. A second message — “Hey Fascist! Catch!,” with five arrow symbols — resembles the code players must press to launch a bomb in the satirical sci-fi video game “Helldivers 2.” A third message, “O Bella ciao,” references an Italian anti-fascist folk song that has been used in pop culture, including the Netflix show “Money Heist” and the first-person shooter game “Far Cry 6.” The final message — “If you Read This, You Are GAY Lmao” — resembles the style of crude “edgelord” taunting commonly found on message boards and chatrooms. Aidan Walker, a content creator who writes about meme culture, said in a video that the etchings suggested Robinson saw the killing as a kind of real-world “s---post” — a trolling and nihilistic message “designed to be maximally disruptive and incomprehensible, cloaked in layer upon layer of irony.”
