"yeah Jen, everyone knows squirrels scream" sincerely I think every time I had heard that particular noise in my life, I thought "huh, must be a weird bird" and thought no further of it 😂 it was only this year that I went "I want to know what the weird bird is"
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
I have a really funny follow-up to this which is: I didn't know squirrels could make noises like that, but they sure can! I feel strongly that squirrels should not squawk or bark like that! they should chitter quietly! squirrels shouldn't be LOUD

I heard a weird bird call outside my window and I grabbed my binoculars and ran outside to see if I could find it but I couldn't see anything 😔 sounded like it might have been a mockingbird or a catbird, but also it might've just been a blue jay getting a little funky with it

also I got added to all those games starter lists, which was well-intentioned, but means that games people find me and tell me their bad opinions. I never got added to a "people who read old books" list, so no one tells me their bad Edith Wharton opinions or whatever (and let's keep it that way)

I mostly post about the books I'm reading here instead of games, even though I love making and designing games more than anything, because, for my sins, I get way more annoyed when people are dumb about games than when they're dumb about novels. I also wish I was different about this lmao

I don’t really like smart appliances or anything, but our house does have a smart thermostat from the previous owners, and being able to turn the heat on without getting out of bed is the single greatest use of a phone app ever invented

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

The spice girls are just a different flavor of knights

You gotta be BAD you gotta be BOLD you gotta be WISER

What if I finally wrote the book about knights I’ve been threatening to write for a decade but when you see the whole ritual of knighthood you gradually realize that this setting’s version of the oath is just subtly rewritten lyrics from You Gotta Be by Des’ree

I literally once was in a Call of Cthulhu game where the rest of the players, right before we got into the thick of it, were like "you know what, I think this is above our pay grade, we should leave and write a report to our supervisors" or something along those lines. terrible. terrible!

I adore my friends in my home group, but I have never wanted to murder them as often as I did during our Star Trek RPG campaign when every session was an uphill fight to keep everyone from going off on "hey do you remember the episode where x did y" every 10 minutes

oh very much same, I usually feel bad that I'm the one going "guys we're playing a game here, PLEASE" but also..... guys we're playing a game here, PLEASE.

you're right and you should say it

my rpg mild take for october is that I think horror games are the most easily ruined by players trying to be too genre savvy about it (ALL genres can be ruined by this, though). if your characters are too smart to go investigate the spooky shit going on, it's going to be a boring game. cut it out

typing up and deleting like a half dozen very transparently sour grapes posts and taking it to the group chat like god intended. ALTHOUGH at least I have the presence of mind to know when I'm being sour grapes and not to post that lmao

it COULD end up being a Shape of Water type year again maybe! it COULD happen for Sinners! but idk where everyone was going with the "it's a for-sure lock" so early in the year. that movie came out in MARCH, you can't say anything about a movie's awards chances in march
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
I never expected it to be a serious contender for best picture (nominated maybe!). and it's still a very strong contender in the technical awards, where genre movies tend to be more recognized! also, Sinners winning best original song over Wicked part 2 is gonna hit like crack!
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
I'm not really sure where all this new "omg Sinners is gonna get overlooked at the Oscars oh no" conversation is coming from after festival season (because of OBAA and Marty Supreme I guess?). like... yeah? it's speculative fiction? fantasy and scifi nearly always get overlooked at the Oscars lmao

I'm gonna make this game next year I think

so this girl group that I was following for a couple years got broken up by their label earlier this year, and part of their whole gimmick was that they lived in a big house together, and one of them posted some vids of moving out of the girl group house, and I keep having sad game ideas about it
A youtube thumbnail of a girl holding up clothes on hangers in her bedroom, with the video title "moving out of the girl group house"

if you like kpop demon hunters, you should listen to boys world and katseye, two different labels' attempts to make vaguely westernized kpop groups, I'm definitely not just saying this because boys world was already disbanded for flopping and I'm still sad about it and I don't want that for katseye
