lmao if you google poison dart frogs, the literal THIRD result is from national geographic kids, which was like my bible as a kid. my grandma bought us a subscription to it every year for christmas (and we used to pore over regular nat geo issues that she had just piled up for years in her basement)
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
did other children of approximately my age also go through a phase of being really obsessed with poison dart frogs? like it was part of the big "save the rainforest" cultural moment when we were children, right? and the tiny colorful frogs were like a mascot for that? I'm not imagining this

Roofman pretty good! Very funny that I read A Burglar’s Guide to the City just a couple months ago, which has a few sections about the Jeffrey Manchester robberies, after it sat on my shelf for years, just in time for a movie about him lmao

I am seeing Roofman tonight, which means: yet again time to cry at the Rental Family trailer (movie still a month away)
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
Oh Christ not the Wuthering Heights trailer again I’m so sick of it already 😫 and this one is like FOUR months away
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
Movie theaters have had assigned seating that you choose when you buy your ticket for years and years why are people so bad at this still

Things I have said today:
“The relationship between a knight and a squire is something that can be SO personal actually”
“The relationship between a man and his family’s named ancestral weapon is something that can be SO personal actually”

I think... both of the games I'm bringing to Metatopia are like, actually ready and testable, a full month ahead of time! this has never happened before! I think last year I was scrambling to the last minute to get things ready! wow!

you can actually watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms right now (season 8 episode 2 aka the last good episode of Game of Thrones yes I will die on this hill)

stopppppp no oh no I keep thinking about it

scribbling out a new game idea, writing VERY FIRMLY, pen really INDENTING THE PAPER, because I am quite adamant that I DO NOT HAVE TIME FOR THIS ONE RIGHT NOW. get IN the notebook, I'll come back to you LATER 😤
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
like that character and his arc still very much required him to go along with the rest of the group doing pirate shenanigans, so the game could... function lmao (and, you know, it was ONE character out of SIX. we'd have had a real problem if ALL of them decided to make characters like that)
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
you can do subversions in a way that is fun and interesting (one time in a pirate game, a player made a character who HATED pirates and had only turned to piracy out of desperation and had to undergo character growth about it! that's interesting!) but not if they stop the story from happening at all
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
when I say all genres, I am thinking about one particular game where we were doing like a fast-and-furious street gangs and hot rods thing, and a rival gang had stolen a bike from us and someone was like "I think we should just call the cops". well. no. that's not the thing we're playing here.
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
my rpg mild take for october is that I think horror games are the most easily ruined by players trying to be too genre savvy about it (ALL genres can be ruined by this, though). if your characters are too smart to go investigate the spooky shit going on, it's going to be a boring game. cut it out
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
Maybe! Every game is different, so I don't like to make universal calls like that. But player willingness to engage with a concept is something that is a lot broader than any given game, or even a given genre (because it's certainly not just horror where this happens)
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
Like the cleverness of "I have outwitted the thing" but not the wisdom of "if I don't do the thing, we don't have an interesting game". Tomato-fruit-salad etc.
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
I think that's probably correct, but also I think when I see players do it, THEY think they're being savvy, almost a sense of "aha, I am smarter than [character in horror movie who should know better than to go into the basement alone]".
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
"yeah Jen, everyone knows squirrels scream" sincerely I think every time I had heard that particular noise in my life, I thought "huh, must be a weird bird" and thought no further of it 😂 it was only this year that I went "I want to know what the weird bird is"
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
I have a really funny follow-up to this which is: I didn't know squirrels could make noises like that, but they sure can! I feel strongly that squirrels should not squawk or bark like that! they should chitter quietly! squirrels shouldn't be LOUD
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
I heard a weird bird call outside my window and I grabbed my binoculars and ran outside to see if I could find it but I couldn't see anything 😔 sounded like it might have been a mockingbird or a catbird, but also it might've just been a blue jay getting a little funky with it
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
also I got added to all those games starter lists, which was well-intentioned, but means that games people find me and tell me their bad opinions. I never got added to a "people who read old books" list, so no one tells me their bad Edith Wharton opinions or whatever (and let's keep it that way)
jenkatwrites.bsky.social
I mostly post about the books I'm reading here instead of games, even though I love making and designing games more than anything, because, for my sins, I get way more annoyed when people are dumb about games than when they're dumb about novels. I also wish I was different about this lmao

I don’t really like smart appliances or anything, but our house does have a smart thermostat from the previous owners, and being able to turn the heat on without getting out of bed is the single greatest use of a phone app ever invented

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.
