I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

I think our consumerist society is invested in people tying their identities to the things like like so that they can be sold products, and when your sense of self is defined by the stuff you like, criticism of stuff becomes criticism of you and that hurts. But you are more than what you like!

this is imo one of the most important and fun things about maturing as a person. to separate your sense of self from the things you like allows you to criticize and engage with other people, learn new perspectives, understand the art you like and you don't better. It's uncomfortable but worth it!
