On a very basic level, we evolved emotions because they helped us survive. We're pack animals - we need connection. Killing the parts of yourself that care *separates* you from those around you. Empathy, guilt, fear, sadness, rage at injustice - these are the ways we recognize and honor each other.
I think the general internet argument view of “you have emotion about this event har har, you’re triggered, you have an emotional response to cruelty har har” has been a complete disaster for humanity both for the person being told that and for the person saying it
